What is Imposter Word?
Imposter Word is a social-deduction party game — Among Us energy, but the weapon is words. Each round, everyone is shown the same category, like "Things your mom yelled from downstairs" or "Minecraft mobs" — everyone except the imposter, who sees only "You are the IMPOSTER. Blend in."
The imposter has to reverse-engineer the category from everyone else's answers and submit something that plausibly fits — while the rest of the table hunts for the answer that doesn't quite belong. After the answer phase, everyone votes on who they think the imposter is. Answers are judged by the humans at the table, never by an algorithm: the vote is the whole game.
How to play
- Gather 3 or more players in a room (the more, the messier — in a good way).
- Each round, everyone secretly receives the category — except the imposter, who's told only to blend in. The imposter changes from round to round.
- Answer phase: everyone types an answer to the category. Answers appear on screen as they're submitted — the imposter reads them and improvises something that could fit.
- Vote phase: the table votes on who the imposter is.
- Scoring: if the imposter survives the vote, they score big (+3). If the table catches them, everyone who voted right scores +1. The imposter is only caught on a clear plurality — tied votes let them walk.
- After 5 rounds, the highest cumulative score wins.

Harder difficulties give the imposter less time to improvise — and the table less time to deliberate.
Strategy tips
Playing as the table (crew)
- Suspect the safe answer. Imposters gravitate to vague, could-fit-anything answers. If the category is "Things you find between couch cushions" and someone wrote "stuff", start there.
- Watch specificity, not correctness. Real category-knowers write weirdly specific answers without trying. An answer that's technically plausible but oddly generic is the classic imposter tell.
- Don't be too obvious yourself. A hyper-obscure flex answer can read as "person guessing wildly" and get you voted out. Innocent players get voted out in this game constantly.
Playing as the imposter
- Mine the other answers. Your one job in the answer phase is pattern-matching: what do the revealed answers have in common? Even a half-guess at the theme beats a random word.
- Match the register. If everyone's answers are short and jokey, be short and jokey. Tone mismatch gets caught faster than content mismatch.
- Commit in the vote. Accuse someone, confidently. Imposters who go quiet during the vote phase might as well confess.
