What is Category Blitz?

Category Blitz is a simultaneous, round-based category game — think Scattergories crossed with a typing race. There are no turns, no lives and no elimination: every player sees the same category at the same moment and races to type as many valid answers as they can before the round ends. After 3 rounds, the highest total score wins.

The categories are the point. You won't get "things that are green" — you'll get "Things in your junk drawer", "Gas station purchases at 2am", "Minecraft mobs" or "Foods that shouldn't exist but do". Every prompt is picked to make the table argue.

And the judge is an AI. Common answers are recognized instantly from curated answer lists; anything unusual is sent to an AI judge that decides whether your galaxy-brain answer actually fits the category. Creative-but-valid answers score. Nonsense doesn't.

How to play

  1. Create a room and share the code (or play solo against a bot).
  2. A category appears for everyone at once, and a 20-second round timer starts.
  3. Type answers as fast as they come to you and submit each one. Every accepted answer is 1 point.
  4. You're racing the clock, not each other — if two players name the same thing, both score.
  5. Between rounds you see everyone's answers — and some sample answers you missed.
  6. After 3 rounds, the highest cumulative score wins.

Rounds lean toward broad, familiar categories so everyone can score, with the occasional niche one for the enthusiasts. The Daily Challenge is a fixed escalating ramp — round 1 is broad, round 3 is niche — and it's the same three categories for every player worldwide that day.

Rerolls: HARD / CRAZY / HELL

Difficulty doesn't change the clock — every round is 20 seconds. It changes how many times your room can reroll a category it hates:

TierRerolls per game
HARD3
CRAZY2
HELL1

A reroll wipes the current round's answers and points and deals a fresh category — use it when a category is dead to the whole table, not just to you. Only the host can pull the trigger, and only in the opening seconds of a round — decide fast.

Strategy tips

  • Volume beats brilliance. Every accepted answer is worth the same 1 point. Ten obvious answers beat two clever ones — empty your head of the easy stuff first.
  • Don't self-censor. The AI judge exists precisely for the borderline answers. If you can imagine defending it out loud, submit it — a rejected answer costs you nothing but the second it took to type.
  • Keep answers short. Valid answers are almost always 1–3 words. If you're typing a sentence, you're thinking about the category wrong.
  • Sweep the category systematically. For "Things in a hotel minibar": drinks, then snacks, then the weird stuff. Mental sub-categories dig up answers panic won't find.
  • Ignore the other players mid-round. Duplicates score for everyone, so watching the leaderboard during the 20 seconds is pure wasted time. Type.
  • Spend rerolls early. A reroll saves the most points when it rescues a round you'd have scored 2 on — there's no prize for finishing the game with one unspent.

FAQ

Is Category Blitz free?

Yes — free in the browser, no account, no download. Create a room and share the code.

How does the AI judging work?

Two stages. Common answers hit a curated accept-list and score instantly. Anything not on the list goes to an AI judge that decides whether it genuinely fits the category — so uncommon-but-correct answers still count.

Can I play solo?

Yes — solo rooms can add a bot to race against.

What are the categories like?

Niche and unexpected on purpose: pop culture ("SpongeBob characters", "Pokemon from Gen 1"), oddly specific ("Things on a CVS receipt"), food ("Things you dip in ranch"). Rooms can also pick themed category packs.
